Get Found When AI Answers — illustration for Answer Engine Optimization for Sales: Get Found by AI

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI systems such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity can find, trust and quote your content when someone asks a question. It builds on classic SEO, but the goal shifts from earning a click to earning the citation. If your buyers research before they ever talk to you, AEO decides whether your name is in the answer they read.

Key takeaways

  • Search is moving from ten blue links to a single synthesized answer, and most AI search sessions end without a click.
  • AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are extensions of SEO, not replacements. Strong fundamentals still matter.
  • Answer-first writing, FAQ content, schema markup, specific statistics and clear authorship are the highest-leverage moves.
  • Technical hygiene counts: crawlable pages, a clean sitemap, robots.txt rules for AI crawlers, and fast mobile pages.
  • Measure visibility differently: track citations and brand mentions in AI answers, not only rankings and traffic.
  • You can start this week with a focused 30-60-90 day plan, even with a small team.

For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on page one. You wrote a page, earned links, and waited for clicks. That model is now sharing the screen with something different: a generated answer that sits above the links and often resolves the question on the spot.

The numbers are moving quickly. According to Superlines' State of GEO report for Q1 2026, 25.11% of Google searches now trigger an AI Overview, up from 13.14% in March 2025. In other words, the share of searches that show an AI-written summary nearly doubled in about a year. Figure 1 shows the change.

Figure 1. Share of Google searches that trigger AI Overviews Source: Superlines, State of GEO Q1 2026

Behavior changes with it. Superlines also reports that 93% of AI search sessions end without a click-through. That is what people mean by zero-click search: the person gets what they need from the answer and never visits a website. Figure 2 puts that in proportion.

Figure 2. AI search sessions by outcome Source: Superlines, State of GEO Q1 2026 (click-through share is the remainder)

Gartner has predicted that traditional search volume will fall 25% by 2026 and 75% by 2028, a figure cited by WPCreative. You can debate the exact pace, and forecasts like this are predictions rather than measurements. But the direction is consistent across every source we reviewed: fewer people are scrolling through lists of links.

98%of CMOs are investing in Answer Engine OptimizationSuperlines, State of GEO Q1 2026

That last number matters for small and mid-sized businesses. If 98% of CMOs are investing in AEO, your larger competitors are already working on being the cited source. The good news is that AEO rewards clarity and specificity more than budget, which gives a focused small business a real opening.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is the discipline of making your content easy for an AI system to extract, verify and cite. An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a direct answer rather than a list of links. That includes Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and the voice assistants on your phone.

These systems do not "rank" pages the way a traditional results page does. They retrieve passages from sources they judge to be relevant and trustworthy, then compose a response, often with a few citations. Your job is to be one of the passages they retrieve and one of the sources they credit.

Three ideas sit underneath AEO:

  1. Extractability. Can a machine lift a clean, self-contained answer from your page without guessing?
  2. Credibility. Does the page show who wrote it, what they know and where the facts came from?
  3. Accessibility. Can crawlers reach, parse and understand the page quickly?

If you remember only those three, you will make good decisions even as the tools change.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

The terms overlap, and people use them loosely. Here is a practical way to separate them. SEO is the umbrella: earning visibility in search. AEO focuses on being the direct answer, including featured snippets, voice answers and AI summaries. Generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses specifically on being cited inside responses produced by generative AI models.

Traditional SEO AEO GEO
Primary goal Rank in the list of links Be the direct answer Be cited in generated responses
Success looks like Clicks and rankings Snippets, voice answers, AI Overview mentions Citations and brand mentions in AI tools
Content style Comprehensive, keyword-aware Question-led, answer-first Fact-dense, quotable, well-sourced
Key signals Links, relevance, page speed Structured data, clear headings, FAQs Statistics, authorship, consistent brand facts
Main metric Organic traffic Answer-box and AI Overview presence Share of citations across prompts

You do not have to choose: one well-built page can serve all three.

There is research behind the GEO side. A 2023 paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, the original GEO study (cited here via LLMPulse), found that adding specific statistics to content lifts the likelihood that generative engines cite it by roughly 30–40%. That finding is the reason this article names its sources and numbers throughout. Concrete, attributed facts give a model something safe to repeat.

How do your buyers research before they talk to you?

The reason AEO matters for sales, and not only for marketing, is buyer behavior. Ciela's February 2026 research reports that 67% of B2B buyers prefer rep-free research. They want to understand the problem, the options and the price range before anyone from your team joins the conversation.

AI makes that research faster. HubSpot's 2025 sales trends research found that 74% of sellers say AI tools make it easier for buyers to gather information about products and services. If you sell, your prospect has probably already asked an AI assistant to compare vendors, explain a service or summarize reviews before they filled out your form.

Salesforce's State of Sales 2026 adds the seller side: 9 in 10 sellers say AI and AI agents will be essential to hitting targets this year. Both sides of the table are using AI. The question is whether the answer your buyer receives includes you.

Figure 3. Buyer and market signals behind AEO Source: Superlines (Q1 2026); Ciela (Feb 2026); HubSpot (2025); Gartner via WPCreative

Figure 3 pulls these signals together. None of them says search is dead. They say something more useful: the first conversation your buyer has about your category is increasingly with a machine, and it happens before you know they exist.

If you grow through referrals, AEO still matters: the person you were introduced to will often ask an AI assistant who you are. Our guide to contact spheres and referral networking covers the other half of that story.

What should an AEO checklist include?

Here is the practical core of this article. These nine moves work together, and you can implement most of them without a developer. They are ordered roughly by how much they help relative to effort.

1. Write answer-first content

Start each page, and each section, with the direct answer in one or two sentences. Then add context, nuance and examples. Answer engines favor passages that stand on their own, so a heading phrased as a question followed by a crisp answer is ideal.

A good test: could someone copy the first two sentences under any heading into a chat window and have it make sense? If not, rewrite until it does. This is the same structure that wins featured snippets, which is why classic SEO and AEO reinforce each other.

2. Build real FAQ sections

People ask questions in full sentences, and AI assistants match on that phrasing. A dedicated FAQ section that answers the exact questions your buyers ask is among the most citable content you can publish. Keep each answer to two to four sentences, lead with the answer, and avoid vague claims.

Gather questions from real sources: sales calls, your inbox and your team's notes.

3. Add structured data and schema markup

Structured data is code that labels your content in a language machines understand. Schema markup is the most common vocabulary for it, maintained at Schema.org. For a business site, the most useful types include:

  • FAQPage for question-and-answer content.
  • Organization or LocalBusiness for who you are, where you operate and how to contact you.
  • Article or BlogPosting with author and publication date.
  • BreadcrumbList to show where a page sits in your site.
  • Product or Service for what you offer.

Markup does not guarantee a citation. What it does is remove ambiguity, so a system does not have to infer which text is the question, which is the answer and who stands behind it. Validate your markup with a testing tool before and after publishing, and make sure it matches the visible content on the page.

4. Use specific, sourced statistics

Vague copy such as "many businesses struggle with leads" gives a model nothing to quote. A sourced statistic does. Given the GEO research above, replace generalities with named numbers wherever you honestly can, and cite the source in the sentence.

Only use figures you can trace to a real source, and keep them current. If you publish your own data, you become the origin others cite.

5. Publish an llms.txt file

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain Markdown file at the root of your domain (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that gives language models a concise, curated map of your most important pages. Think of it as a guide written for machines, listing what your business does and where the best explanations live.

Ciela's February 2026 research suggests only about 10% of sites have adopted llms.txt. That makes it an inexpensive way to stand out, but set expectations honestly: adoption by AI providers is uneven, and no one can promise it changes your citations. It takes under an hour to create, so the downside is small.

6. Set robots.txt rules for AI crawlers

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which parts of your site they may visit. Many AI systems use their own named crawlers, and some sites block them without realizing it, often through a blanket rule or a security plugin. If an AI crawler cannot reach your pages, it cannot learn from them.

Review the file and decide deliberately. You may want to allow AI crawlers on your public marketing and educational content while keeping private areas, such as client portals, off limits. Check each provider's documentation for the current crawler names, since they change.

7. Demonstrate E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness, a framework Google's quality guidelines use to describe credible content. AI systems favor sources that show these traits, so make them visible rather than implied:

  • Put a real author name, role and short bio on every article.
  • Show credentials, affiliations and the practical experience behind the advice.
  • Link to primary sources and name them in the text.
  • Publish clear contact details, an About page and genuine testimonials.
  • Keep facts about your business consistent everywhere they appear.

That last point deserves emphasis. If your website says one thing, your directory listings say another and your social profiles say a third, a model that cross-checks sources sees conflict and may trust none of them.

8. Add breadcrumbs and a clean sitemap

Breadcrumb navigation, ideally with BreadcrumbList schema, tells both people and machines how your pages relate. A page that lives under "Blog > SEO & AEO > Answer Engine Optimization" has context. An XML sitemap lists every page you want discovered and tells crawlers when each was last updated.

Keep the sitemap accurate and reference it in robots.txt.

9. Make pages fast and mobile-friendly

Many questions are asked on phones, and crawlers reward pages that load quickly and render cleanly. Compress images, avoid heavy scripts, make sure text is readable without zooming, and use plain HTML for important content rather than hiding it behind scripts that some crawlers do not run.

  1. 1
ResearchCollect the real questions buyers ask
  2. 2
AnswerWrite a direct two-sentence answer first
  3. 3
ProveAdd a sourced statistic and a named author
  4. 4
Mark upAdd FAQ, breadcrumb and article schema
  5. 5
PublishUpdate sitemap, llms.txt and internal links
  6. 6
MeasureTest prompts and track citations monthly
Figure 4. The AEO content workflow

Figure 4 above shows how these pieces fit into one repeatable workflow. Run it for every new page and you build a library of answer-ready content instead of a one-off project.

What are the most common AEO mistakes?

Most failures are not technical. They come from habits that worked in the old model. Watch for these.

  • Burying the answer. Long preambles about "the importance of" a topic push the useful sentence out of reach.
  • Writing for keywords instead of questions. The exact phrase matters less than whether you answer the question behind it.
  • No visible authorship. Anonymous content gives a system little reason to trust it.
  • Blocking crawlers by accident. A security plugin or an old robots.txt rule can quietly remove you from the conversation.
  • Inconsistent facts. Different addresses, descriptions or service names across your profiles weaken trust.
  • Publishing once and forgetting. Answers go stale. Pages that are reviewed and dated stay credible.
  • Measuring only clicks. If you judge AEO by traffic alone, you will undercount the value of being cited.

The last mistake is the subtle one, so it is worth its own section.

How do you measure AEO and GEO visibility?

When 93% of AI search sessions end without a click, as Superlines reports, traffic alone understates what is happening. Someone can read an answer that names your firm, remember it and search for you directly a week later. That shows up as branded search or a direct visit, not as a click from the AI tool.

So measure a broader set of signals. The table below shows what to track, how to track it and how often.

What to measure How to measure it Cadence
Citations in AI answers Ask a fixed list of 15–25 buyer questions in each major AI tool and record whether you are cited Monthly
Brand mentions Same prompt test, noting whether your name appears even without a link Monthly
AI Overview presence Search your target questions on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites Monthly
Featured snippets and answer boxes Rank-tracking or manual checks on question queries Monthly
Branded search and direct traffic Search console and analytics trend lines Monthly
Referral traffic from AI tools Analytics referral reports Monthly
Crawl health Crawl stats, sitemap status, schema validation reports Quarterly
Conversations that mention AI A simple question on forms and calls: "How did you first hear about us?" Ongoing

Run the prompt test the same way each time, using the same questions and recording results in a simple spreadsheet. AI answers vary from run to run, so look at trends over several months rather than single results. Treat any one answer as a sample, not a verdict.

The last row is the most underrated: ask new prospects how they found you and whether they used an AI assistant.

What does a 30-60-90 day AEO plan look like?

Here is a realistic plan for a small team. The chart shows an illustrative trajectory for a citation count, and the table describes the work behind it.

Figure 5. Illustrative AEO citation count over 90 days (illustrative) Source: Illustrative example — not client data

Figure 5 is hypothetical. Your results will depend on your market, your competition and how much content you already have. The shape is what matters: progress compounds as you publish and refine.

Days 1–30: Fix the foundation

  • Audit your top 10 pages for crawlability, speed and mobile experience.
  • Check robots.txt, your sitemap and any security settings that block crawlers.
  • Collect 25 real buyer questions from calls, emails and your team.
  • Build your baseline: run the prompt test and record where you stand.
  • Standardize your business facts (name, description, services, contact details) everywhere.

Days 31–60: Rewrite and mark up

  • Rewrite your five most important pages answer-first.
  • Add FAQ sections with real questions and short answers.
  • Implement Organization, FAQPage, Article and BreadcrumbList schema.
  • Add author bios, dates and named sources to every article.
  • Publish your llms.txt file.

Days 61–90: Expand and measure

  • Publish four to six new question-led articles, each with sourced statistics.
  • Re-run the prompt test and compare with your baseline.
  • Decide the next 90 days based on what moved.

How does this site use these techniques?

This site practices what it describes. Every post on higginsassistant.com opens with a direct answer, follows with a short list of takeaways and uses question-style headings. Each article ends with a frequently asked questions section that is marked up as FAQ schema, and carries article and breadcrumb markup, a sitemap entry and named sources for its figures.

We cite third-party research by name, such as Salesforce, Gartner, HubSpot and Superlines, so a reader or a model can trace the claim. Pages are built to load quickly on mobile, and the site publishes an llms.txt file to guide AI systems to the content that matters most. You can see all of this in the page structure of the article you are reading.

Copy the model: for every page, ask "what question does this answer, and can a machine quote it?"

How does AEO connect to the rest of your sales system?

AEO is not a separate marketing project. It is the front door to your pipeline. Better visibility brings in better-informed visitors, which changes what happens next in the sales process.

Prospects who arrive after reading a clear answer ask sharper questions and qualify themselves faster, which makes prioritization easier. That connects to our guide to AI lead scoring.

The market context is also relevant. Gartner's April 2026 prediction says that by 2029, sales organizations with AI-driven enablement will reach 40% faster sales stage velocity than those using traditional enablement. Visibility and velocity are linked: if buyers show up informed, fewer cycles are spent on basic education.

Adding AEO should not mean adding tools: Salesforce's State of Sales 2026 reports that 42% of sales reps are overwhelmed by too many tools. Keep the process light and let an assistant carry the repetitive parts.

How does Higgins help you get found by AI?

Higgins is an AI business growth accelerator from higgins.ai, built around the S.A.L.E.s approach: Sourcing the right clients, Assessing how they buy, Listening to their needs and Empowering them to refer others. Visibility is part of sourcing, because clients cannot choose you if they cannot find you. You can read the full approach on the Higgins S.A.L.E.s page.

Here is how Higgins supports the AEO work in this article.

A 30+ page SEO assessment with a 90-day plan. The S.A.L.E.s package starts with a detailed SEO assessment and a 90-day plan, with a simple aim: be the site that answers the questions business owners ask. It gives you a prioritized map rather than a loose list of tips, which suits the 30-60-90 structure above.

The Higgins BOT on your website. The Higgins BOT goes on your site, and every button click and question is recorded in a BOT analytics dashboard, reviewed with you every 90 days. Those recorded questions are valuable raw material. They show what your real visitors want to know, which is exactly the input for the question-led pages and FAQs described earlier.

A ChatBOT for your site. The Accelerator Premium plan includes a ChatBOT for your website, alongside an SEO analysis and website fix. The Quick Start Pro plan also includes an SEO analysis and website fix. You can compare the options on the Get Higgins page.

One assistant instead of many tools. Higgins sits on top of your existing software as an intelligent layer, so you talk to it instead of wrestling with menus. It uses 18+ AI models in one, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Llama and DeepSeek, and describes 101+ specialized AI models working as a team. For a small team, that means less time juggling tools. We explore that theme in our post on too many sales tools.

Reports and dashboards on demand. HigginsReports delivers full-serve AI dashboard reports to your inbox and privately in the app, including monthly roadmaps with realistic goals based on sales-growth analysis. You can also ask for any report, presentation or spreadsheet on demand, which makes the monthly measurement routine easier to maintain.

Higgins is built with security in mind. It is encrypted and HIPAA, SOC 2 and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, which matters if you work in a regulated field and want an assistant that handles your business information carefully. Over 42,232 global businesses use Higgins, according to the Higgins site.

For enterprise clients under a written Statement of Work, Higgins offers a minimum 130% ROI within a year or works at no cost until achieved, with liability limited to the SOW amount. You can read the terms at the guarantee page and estimate your own numbers with the ROI calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems and search features can extract, trust and cite it as a direct answer. It combines answer-first writing, FAQ content, structured data and clear authorship. The goal is to be quoted in the answer, not only listed among the links.

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO focuses on ranking in the list of links, while AEO focuses on being the direct answer in snippets, voice results and AI summaries. Most of the groundwork, including fast pages, clear structure and trustworthy content, helps both.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your content likely to be cited inside responses written by generative AI models. A 2023 GEO paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, cited via LLMPulse, found that adding specific statistics lifts citation likelihood by roughly 30–40%. In practice, GEO favors fact-dense, well-sourced and clearly attributed writing.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional and low-cost, but not a proven ranking factor. Ciela's February 2026 research suggests about 10% of sites have adopted llms.txt, and support from AI providers is uneven. Because it takes under an hour to create, many businesses add it as a cheap signal while focusing the real effort on content quality and structured data.

Can a small business compete in AI answers?

Yes, because AEO rewards clarity, specificity and real expertise more than size. A small business that answers the exact questions its buyers ask, names its sources and shows who wrote the content can be cited alongside much larger brands. Start with your five most important pages and a baseline prompt test.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Track citations and brand mentions across a fixed list of buyer questions in the major AI tools, along with AI Overview presence, branded search and direct traffic. Because 93% of AI search sessions end without a click, according to Superlines, traffic alone will understate results. Review the numbers monthly and look at trends rather than single answers.

Next steps

Start small: pick your five most important pages, rewrite them answer-first, add real FAQs and run a baseline prompt test this week. Then work through the 30-60-90 plan above.
